The Boy Frost..... Literally!

I have been a bit quiet on the blogging front recently due to the arrival of little man you see above. This little dollop, or Harry as we call him, has been in mine and Teresa's life now for 11 weeks and a little bundle of joy he is to! There are lots of exciting projects lined up for me this year, new clients, new prints and plenty of work to be done, so hopefully the Old Boy Frost can fit everything in now the New Boy Frost is in the world!

Only a few weeks left! I have had a selection of my work hanging in the lovely Maitreya Social in Bristol for the past few months, so if you were lucky enough to sample some of the fine, fine food, you would also have had a treat for the eyes as well. I have been lucky enough to be included in a smashing new publication compiled by the lovely Caspar Williamsom entitled Reinventing Screenprinting. The idea behind the book is to highlight practitioners from around the world who are using screenprinting, letterpress and other hands on processes to create artworks rather than just clicking the print button on the computer. Over the moon to have a double page featuring The Dead Wrestler, Rocket X and the fire and police cars. Published by A&C Black and available from all good bookshops, it looks great on all coffee tables!

It's always a bit strange to be asked to create a series of Christmas cards in the height of summer, but when the people asking are the lovely folks at Hello!Lucky, I was more than happy to get my festive head on. They were also keen for me to create a few more stamp themed designs, so my three cards carry a red cardinal, snowy owl and an arctic fox to get you in a wintery mood. I have also done a little Q&A over on their blog if you would like to delve a bit deeper into my mind!

Some days start like any other day. You get up, bleary eyed, shower, have breakfast and drag your tired body into another tedious day of paper pushing and number crunching. Other days, the lovely people over at Prema commission you to paint a metre high rocket! It's these days that makes me realise I have the best job in the world. It was a really fun project to work on and I am really happy with the results, and from what I hear, it has been getting good comments from people who have spotted it sitting outside Prema.

So, if there is anyone else out there who wants to commission me to paint a large rocket, it would really be no trouble at all!

Not Another Bill!

I was recently asked by Fiona of the lovely Soma Gallery here in Bristol to contribute a print for the Not Another Bill mail out she was curating. After a back breaking afternoon printing an edition of 200, this is what finally came out! It is a two colour print on cardboard, and editioned using an old, and very heavy perforated number punch machine. You can read more information over at Soma, and also about Not Another Bill. It is such a simple and brilliant idea, especially for a birthday or Christmas. Who wouldn't want a surprise package full of wonderment instead of a gas bill?

The beautiful Beate and the handsome Tim got themselves married the other week, so to mark the occasion, I custom painted a car for the lovely pair! The car is emblazoned with T&B Racing with a big red 16 on the side and on the box so they never forget their anniversary! Big Matches

I gave you a little cheeky peek of the large 3D match box series I was producing for the exhibition a while back, so I thought it was high time to show you the finished articles. All hand painted, screen printed and varnished, these three came out so much better than I could have hoped for, which is always a relief! As they were built to reflect the skewed angles of the original prints, it's fairly tricky to tell if they are 3D at all, so the below photograph should make it a touch easier....

For the budding philatelist, I present to you the complete collection of wildlife stamp books. The 'Birds of the British Isles' has now been joined by six types of pond life and six proud mammals. Earlier this week I helped friend and fellow illustrator, Emma Dibben, with a spot of screen printing. It took no longer than an hour, but was presented with the most beautiful veg box I have ever seen in my life (plus some cider) for my troubles! The screen print in question is being featured in the new Antlers show taking place a few doors down from us here at Snap. Also well worth a visit is Emma's lovely work to be found here, and her blog following the seasons on her amazing allotment, where all the crisp, fresh veg was grown with love. My belly thanks you Emma!

Skye! The radio silence of late has been down to a week of wild and windy camping on the beautiful Isle of Skye. Truly stunning and a great place to recharge the old batteries before ploughing back into work. The exhibition went swimmingly in the end, even after a frantic race to the finish, and I will be posting images of all the new work here very soon and in the shop as well. Don't let the photo fool you with its blue sky either. It was Scotland after all!

This has been my world for the past few weeks, churning out new screen prints down in Snaps printing basement. I should have six new prints to preview at the exhibition and a few 3D numbers as well. Right, back to the grind stone, and pictures of all the new work and the final show to come soon.

Well, what a bloody lovely bank holiday weekend. Sun shining, flowers blooming, alfresco dining. Perfect! But with the exhibition looming and plenty of work to be done, our garden was turned into an open air workshop to turn the matchbox prints like this one.....

....into something a little bit more tangible. The sawing, gluing, filling, nailing and screwing is now complete, leaving a good deal of painting and varnishing, but for a lazy bank holiday, not too bad!

Pond Life

These two are just the black and white layers for a print I will be bringing to life next week. Along side the frog and newt will sit a dragonfly, toad, water boatman and perch. The birds and pond life will also be joined by some mammals of these fair isles, which is my task for today!

The new cars have finally arrived at the starting line! The car above is the big brother of the two. It weighs in at 32 x 9 x 11cm, a brute, with a full set of old Meccano tin wheels. Screen printed in this seasons livery and buffed to a high gloss finish here at my workshop, it will leave the competition standing. For sale here.

The above little whipper snapper rocks up to the line at a smaller 20 x 7 x 6.5cm, but what it lacks in size it sure does make up for in the looks department. With a fresh set of brass and rubber vintage Meccano wheels, on the asphalt it packs a serious punch. For sale here.
They both come with seat belts, ABS and a hand screen printed box as standard!

Just a small peek at the box lid for the new cars. Spent the morning with Papa Frost cutting all the boxes on his machine that cuts cardboard fast enough to make my tiny brain hurt! I swear to God, if these damn cars aren't tucked up all snug in these boxes by the beginning of next week, I will give myself a bloody good talking to.

Just spent the morning in the paint shop (basement) at the studio sanding down the plywood and screen printing the four colours onto both sides of the new cars. It's always a pleasure to put on the final layer and see that it all works and you haven't just wasted an entire morning!

The next time I post them, they will be all singing, all dancing racers.

I now have all the elements in place to get the next project on the go. The laser cut plywood is back from the factory, and the Meccano wheels are ready to go. Going to spend the next few days printing four colours directly onto the wood and then a bit of varnish, a few nuts and bolts, a box, then onto the shelves!

Toy Museum + Ebay = Inspiration

Spent a lovely day in London with the other half a few weeks ago and finally managed to get to The Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. Such a lovely place to lose a few hours, although makes me feel really old to see Nintendo Gameboys already displayed as museum pieces!

As is normal, my interest in the museum seemed to focus on all the wind-up tin toys and vintage wooden pieces, so I have returned to the studio with a new idea in mind to use up all my lovely tin Meccano wheels I have found on ebay. Watch this space......

Recently had a bundle of t-shirts arrive from the nice folk over at WFMU in the States. I hear from them that it has been a popular design and I am chuffed with how well the image worked out.

So chuffed in fact that I created a screen printed version to put into an exhibition. My old degree course in Falmouth are putting on a retrospective of past students work, so this print will soon be off to The Illustration Cupboard in London for what looks set to be a damn fine show.

WFMU Fundraiser

A few weeks back the lovely folks over the pond at the independent radio station, WFMU, asked me if I would design a T-shirt for there upcoming fundraiser. Tenderfoot is up and running! After all the hard work by the lovely ladies Lori and Helen, our little pocket of Bristol finely has a shop we can all be proud of. The sign also finally got finished on Friday, the day before the grand opening! After a terrible day on Thursday where my printer wouldn't print, the paint wouldn't paint and the ladder wouldn't reach, I finally resorted to my old friend, the jigsaw and plywood. I think in the end it created a much stronger sign, and hopefully one that does this emporium of goodies proud.

It is in the stages of having a loving restoration by my good friend Lori and her business partner Helen, and will soon be newly christened Tenderfoot. It will be the cultural hotspot of our little corner of Bristol with past highlights being a bakery that doesn't actually bake its own bread and a veg shop that mainly sold crisps and sweets! On sale will be gifts and crafts and plenty of interesting workshops. It has been hanging on the wall in my studio, looking over my desk for quiet a few months, so I thought I would give it its first public outing. This little chap was painted for an exhibition I had in London last year, but was the inspiration behind my Super Bingo print. Similar to that print with its number token, his little numbers have been cut out from vintage magazines and maps to create the score card. Six!

Today at Snap we welcome the arrival in all his colourful splendor of the fabulous Jonny Hannah. The gallery has been packed full of his endlessly inspiring prints, goodies and oddities. Also, as part of the gallery rehang, I got around to framing my Circus print I did for Boxbird in Hove. A bit of a weight!

What we have here is a piece I did a few months back for an exhibition in the depths of Gloucestershire. It's an image that I first did for a card design but also thought it would look nice on a much bigger scale. So out came the jigsaw and old bits of plywood I have lying around the house and out popped this gent with his leotard and moustache. When I came to deciding what frame to put him in, I realised an off the peg, shop bought one simply wasn't up to scratch. So out came the saw once again, and voila, our old spare bedroom skirting board is now a bespoke frame. Nothing like a bit of recycling!

Nautical Matches

Spent a few relaxing days away last week, but it is always nice to come back and have ideas already on the table and ready to print. This first new offering came about from always looking at my small but perfect formed collection of vintage Bingo cards. A piece of nicely aged vintage paper has been used for the card itself and then a two colour print over the top onto a textured Arboreta paper. The icing on the Bingo cake comes from a vintage Lotto token. House!

Ooooh, aaaah, wow wee! Fireworks! This is my mini print that I am just about to go downstairs and screen print for this years Snap mini print exhibition. A few weekends ago I undertook my first workshop teaching kids how to make some toys. It was for the lovely people over at Prema, and was entitled 'Rockets and Rayguns'. In the build up to the workshop, it dawned on me that I had never actually made a rocket or a ray gun, so with a bit more laser cutting and screen printing I came up with these little men in their flying machines.

They stand 14 inches tall and come in fully fueled at £125. Which is a damn site cheaper than what NASA will quote you!

Just finished putting the last coat of varnish on the spanking new sign for Snap. Spent a weekend hand painting this little beauty, so hopefully it will have the desired effect of catching peoples eyes from far away and pulling them in the direction of the shop.

I really enjoyed doing this project and I am looking forward to seeing it weather and take on some character as we grow old together! There are even some raised little elements on the sign which I think is the cherry on the cake.

Two new gleaming cars have just rolled off the production line. Just in time for my exhibition for the lovely people over at Prema we have an eye catching fire department vehicle and an all sirens blazzing ambulance. That a whole lot of horse power right there!

The complete line up including the police wagon and the sporty little number all fresh from the carwash awaiting new owners!

I have been fortunate enough to be selected for the up coming exhibition at Boxbird Gallery in Hove. The theme is anything based around travel and transport so I have taken a trip to the circus. At the moment the image is just a figment of the computers imagination but later this week (when my lovely new screens arrive!) it will be an actual living and breathing screen print.

To see it in the flesh the exhibition runs from Friday 7th May- Thursday 27th May with over 30 top artists from around this here globe of ours.

A few weeks back I was featured as part of the Motivation Monday thread over at the lovely Apple and the Egg blog. A few of the sketch book pages featured some pencil ramblings that included a strange bird wearing a house that is now reality in the above screen print. Put a little bird house in your soul!

An updated version of the kick back lino prints I did a while back, this time as an edition of 17 screen prints on lovely Somerset paper. Nice to finally get around to doing a screen print on paper rather than plywood. A touch easier to say the least! In the shop now for a snip at £35.

Wow, joining a studio sure does open up a pretty full diary around the festive period. Been busy getting screen printed goodies in the shop in good time along side making new friends. We had a lovely Christmas party in Snap as the gallery was magically transformed into the cosiest eatery in the West! Blurred photos obviously have nothing to do with vintage cider!

Well, December is here, which can only mean one thing and that it is time to think festive. We have just rehung the gallery at Snap ready for the Christmas opening on December 3rd (6-9pm) and due to me opening my big mouth, my task was to create a tree to pop in the window. With the kind permission of the true gent Mr Bjorn Lie, we used one of his lovely Nordic style trees as inspiration. So, once again, with jigsaw and a large sheet of weathered plywood in hand, the cutting and painting began. After all the hard work I think it looks pretty damn good. Hope you (and Bjorn) do too!

Producing a mini version of my wrestlers ready for the Christmas rush! I have done 17 of two colour ways. Been a bit of an under taking as it involves laser cut plywood, hand painting, screen printing and varnishing. They will also be popped in a nice screen printed box..... phew!

I have donated a big wrestler to the Jamaica Street Artists auction that will be taking place on December 3rd at the Bristol City Museum to help raise funds for the purchase of the building.

The museum is free to get into and the exhibition is well worth checking out, full of cracking artwork of all different styles.

A new home

Had a big change in the work situation recently. After spending the last 7ish years working at my home studio in the attic, I am now lucky enough to be a part of Snap Studios along with the seven other lovely people who work there. Still in an attic studio, but at least I am seeing actual humans! Above is the first of many screen prints I will be doing at Snap, a Christmas card to raise funds for Snap. Come down and get yourself some before they sell out!

Just spent a great weekend flitting between Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire for a friends wedding. I had the honour of being the best man so thought it fitting to give them a gift that will remind them of all the hard work I put in to make their day so special! I decided to do a hand painted, customized version of my screen printed cars, which takes a hell of a lot longer to produce but the result is a hell of a lot more satisfying. They are painted in lightly sanded back acrylic paint and finished with a satin varnish.

If you were wondering, the C&S stands for Chris and Samara (the couple in question), 26 is the day they got hitched, and the number plate has the wedding date on it also.

I haven't done a lino cut for many a year so thought I would see do a teeny weeny mini print. Not sure what to do with them yet, but I rather like the little blighters!

Well, just like that, 6 weeks have past and the time to bring the exhibition back home to Bristol is here. Everyone that came to see it seemed to like all the work, and thanks for all the kind comments. Farewell also to the big wrestlers, enjoy your new home!

Spent a lovely sunny day in Spitalfields hanging all the artworks for my upcoming show 'It was like that when I found it' as part of the Art at Ketchum programme of exhibitions. Below is a little sneaky peek of what you can see on them there walls. He is made out of old plywood and cut by hand with a jigsaw don't you know!

The cars have landed!

After a long uphill struggle I have managed to wheel out the first two cars from theboyfrost garage! Involving screen prints, lasercut ply, vintage meccano wheels and hand painted elements these little bundles of joy are a celebration of car design of yesteryear when, lets face it, most things looked better! I have also produced some limited edition prints on lovely 310g Metaphor recycled paper for those who don't drive.......The building process starts. I felt like I was 12 again and I had been given an Airfix kit.
And the final results. Two automobiles ready to head off into the sunset. After all the hard work it is nice to finally see them in the flesh and thankfully I am chuffed with how they turned out. Hope you like them too!

Found this old game in a bric-a-brac shop on the Isle of Skye a few weeks back. 'The more rapidly the trading proceeds, the greater the babel, the more laughter, and the more ludicrous the excitement.' They were lying! Rather splendid box though.

I've been hitting ebay hard over the last few weeks in preparation for what I like to call 'operation car!' I now have enough vintage Meccano wheels to get me started on the project that will also involve laser cut plywood, screen printing, hand painted elements and packaging design. Really looking forward to diving head first into a 3D project and hopefully the final results will make it worthwhile.
Also found a few nice bargains on ebay recently which should help inspire the new project!

Toddled my way over to Bath a week or so ago to get a print done for a couple of friends 30th. On recommendation I popped into The Fine Art Print Company where the ever helpful Dunstan managed, in the blink of an eye, to print my image with colours so crisp you could almost swim in them! It's so refreshing to find a print company with the care and attention to produce prints that are so close to how you created them on screen. Bloody marvellous!

At the end of last year I finally picked up the paint brush again after a long, long time. It felt good to be putting actual colours onto a surface rather than just dropping them down in photoshop. Hopefully there will be more where this came from in 2009!
